“One of the major goals of every roadmap is to mitigate risks around most critical resource — time.” I also don’t believe in this. I think the major goal of a Product Roadmap is to communicate the strategy around dealing with the value and viability risk.

This post divides the Product Roadmap into layers:

L1: Product Strategy

L2: Bets on how to deliver it

L3: Delivery tactics details, inc. time

“How much time it will take to build …” this should be answered on L3, if needed. It just doesn’t have an L1 spotlight because it’s not the major goal of a roadmap. If we focus on it instead, it will distract us from the actual major goal.
